a hike in Silverton, Colorado you won’t want to miss
In the San Juan National Forest of the Rocky Mountains lies Ice Lake and Island Lake - alpine waters that are so blue you will hardly believe it. The lakes are in a basin between mountain peaks nearly 13,000 feet high. You can get to the lakes via Ice Lakes Trail, a 8 mile out-and-back hike that takes roughly 4 hours to complete. The trail is located near the historic town of Silverton, Colorado, and not far from Ouray and Telluride, vacation destinations for outdoor enthusiasts.
The hike is challenging with the high altitude and an elevation gain of 2,600 feet, but if you take your time and enjoy the views, you’ll be glad you did it!
Despite the difficulty of the incline, Ice Lakes Trail is pretty serene. The fall colors, wide open spaces, sunshine, and cooler temperatures were enjoyable in early September. I saw chipmunks and birds and heard of moose sightings.
Starting early in the day is recommended, with heavy sun exposure and frequent afternoon storms. Wear layers. Bring snacks and plenty of water. Expect to see people as this is a popular hike.
If you feel more comfortable with trekking poles, this hike would be a good one to bring them on. The trail gets narrow at points, especially traveling between the lakes. Otherwise just choose the pace you feel comfortable with and watch your step!
